The basic concept to bear in mind when dealing with balance is the Center of Gravity. A good mental image is of a pole, parallel with the ground, with sand bags hanging off of it. Each sand bag represents the mass of some part of the body, and they are arranged on the pole at the same distances they are on the body.
The center of gravity is the unique point where the pole could be held in one hand, because all of the weight on the left would be balanced by the weight on the right.
Another important point in
balance is that of the "zone of support". This is the area
of space above the characters feet, including the space between the feet.
