Pivot

Although straight-forward walking is a very common action in many animations, it is actually comparatively rare in martial arts animation.  Your figures will seldom have enough free time to saunter from one place to another.

What is much more common is the "pivot-step", where the character bases their weight on one leg, and swings the other either forward or backwards from the hips.  This is generally used simultaneously to move quickly and to generate power for an attack or a block.

This tutorial will focus on executing a pivot-step animation as simply and effectively as possible.  In all likelihood, you will end up animating an awful lot of these if you make a martial arts animation, so we want to make them as quick and painless as they can be.
